Martin House is Yorkshire's hospice for children and young people and works with over 400 families. The aim of Martin House, based near Wetherby, is to provide family led care for children with life threatening and life-limiting illnesses. Opened in 1987, it is a place where children, young people and their families can come to stay from time to time along their journey and find support, rest and practical help. Martin House provides a home from home environment, and offers help in emergencies, symptom control, nursing and practical care, terminal care and bereavement support. It also offers care and support to the families in their own home. It provides care for up to nine families in the main house and six young people in the teenage unit at any one time. Martin House supports children and their families from across the Yorkshire region.
It costs Martin House over £3.9 million to run these vital services each year. As a small local charity, the challenge is to raise the funds needed to provide the care that Martin House offers. Martin House receives very little statutory funding and relies almost entirely upon voluntary donations - at the moment only 7per cent of income is received from local primary health care trusts. Money raised through Jane's Appeal and the Jane Tomlinson Leeds and York 10Ks goes towards meeting those running costs.
"I have worked at Martin House for four years and I never fail to be amazed at the diversity of what happens here, of the resilience of the children and families and of the supportive nurturing presence that Martin House affords families and staff alike. It is truly only thanks to the likes of Jane Tomlinson's 'Run for All' and all those who take part in it that we can provide such a valuable service for these families."
