The following was written to mark the Jane Tomlinson Appeal raising £2million:
"In January 2005 Jane and I were embarrassed to have a press conference announcing that we'd raised one million pounds, it seemed ludicrous, but we needed to say thank you to all those members of the public who had helped. We sat behind a simple desk flagged by boards showing how many miles Jane had swum, biked and run to raise that sum.
"There was a tear in both our eyes as we reflected on the memories. Towards the end of the interview a journalist asked, "So what's the next target?" "Two million," I said too quickly and glibly. It was out of mouth and stuck. As I moved away, another journalist came over, "So how are you two going to raise another million? It's taken you three years to get this far and, no offence, but your health has deteriorated Jane."
"Out of earshot Jane said smiling, "So Mike, two million; just how exactly is that going to happen? I'm not doing anything else."
"Nine months later, after not being able to train for seven month due to chemotherapy and a broken ankle Jane was on the start line of the New York marathon. The Ride Across America was already in the planning and initial discussions had begun with Leeds City Council regarding the 10K.
"Jane knew she would never live long enough to see the two million target achieved, but she knew it would happen."
