Ride Across America (3,800 miles)
The following was written to mark the Jane Tomlinson Appeal raising £2million:
"I'd spent a year helping plan the logistics of the Ride Across America and as the start day approached I knew Jane's health was in poor health. I hadn't seen her for a couple of weeks when we met at Manchester Airport. She was hobbling behind a luggage trolley and clearly in considerable pain. The night before the start Jane, Mike and I were sitting together. Jane was on a pile of 10 cushions trying to get comfortable. We sat in silence until Mike and I told Jane she didn't have to do it, she'd already done so much. But she just said she had to do it and headed off to bed. I don't know how she even managed day one let alone cycling 3,800 miles, with barely one in 10 rest days and through some incredible conditions - frightening climbs, gale force winds, even swarms of migrating crickets. On the last day I was driving Jane to the start point and she confided in me she thought she may have a cracked rib. Watching Jane cycle in to Battery Park, New York I was just so relieved - so relieved she wouldn't have to suffer any more pain and anguish. It was an incredible journey and I feel humbled to have been able to play a part."
