Europe, five weeks and 2500 miles on a bike! Sounds like a challenge?
Having cycled over 2000 miles already, on Monday Mike, Rebecca
and Steven Tomlinson along with their fellow team of cyclists will
complete the final 60miles of their epic challenge to cycle from
Istanbul to Leeds.
Setting off from Misterton Golf Club, the cyclists will be joined by supporters of the appeal including legendary referee Mike Riley and footballer Danny Mills along with local businesses supporters as they too get on their bikes to pedal the final 60miles back to Leeds.
Over the past five weeks the team of cyclists including five children all under the age of 15 have cycled through countries including Bulgaria, Slovakia, Hungary and Belgium facing soaring temperatures, stray dogs, numerous punctures and on average 10 hours in the saddle each day.
Mike Tomlinson said: "It's been a long hard ride which has tested everyone's physical and mental strength. It's been the hardest thing I've ever done but the major credit goes to John and Stuart have covered the distance on too heavy tandems and especially Jack who has managed the whole ride and is only 14. For me, the most important thing is that we all arrive home safely."
Also taking part in the challenge along with the Tomlinson's has been Mike's brother in law John Miller, niece and nephew, Laurie ,11, and Jack, 14, and family friend Stuart Hinde with his daughters Holly,13, and Chloe,11. Over the past five weeks Steven, Holly and Chloe have taken it in turns to join Stuart on the back of a tandem in order to complete the 2500mile distance.
As the team have travelled through Europe we have been able to track their progress and read the latest news from the road as they get increasingly closer to the UK through Mike's daily blogs. www.istanbultoleeds.co.uk
Monday will see the team of cyclist face the final hurdle as they complete the amazing challenge and reach their final destination, Leeds City Centre.
The Jane Tomlinson Appeal would like to thank the events primary sponsors Pocklington Steel and Framecraft Services limited for their support. Along with ASD Westock, Gatorade and CNP.
The support the event has received from local business who have donated products such as Satellite Navigation, Tracking Systems, Insect repellent, Sat Phones and first aid kits has been overwhelming and of great help throughout the challenge.
