Facilities for young patients and their families at Leeds General Infirmary have been given a facelift thanks to the fundraising efforts of a team of NHS business support staff.
Over 60 employees from NHS Shared Business Services' Tingley office took part in last year's Clarion Leeds 10K Corporate Challenge, which forms part of the popular Asda Foundation Jane Tomlinson Run For All Leeds 10K.
They raised over £2,200 for the Jane Tomlinson Appeal, which allocated the money to a project to refurbish a waiting room at the children's x-ray and ultra-sound ward at LGI.
Jane, who raised £1.85m for charity by tackling a series of daunting challenges despite being diagnosed with a terminal illness, used to work on the ward.
A plaque has now been unveiled to mark the completion of the scheme that includes new seating and improved storage as well as lots of new toys, DVDs and books.
Jane Mooney, Jane Tomlinson Appeal Fundraising Assistant, said: "Staff at NHS Shared Business Services really turned out in force to support last year's Clarion Leeds 10K Corporate Challenge and it is brilliant to be able to put all the money they raised to such good use.
"The improvements will make such a difference to the children and their families who often have to make several visits to the ward when they are receiving treatment."
Richard Underwood project manager for NHS Shared Business Services added: "It's fantastic to come and see the result of our fundraising efforts and to know that we've made a difference. Since the event, we've now formed a running club and are in training for this year's event."
Colette Thompson, Senior Paediatric Radiographer at LGI, said: "The waiting area has made such a big difference to all our patients, the area has made the daunting experience of having lengthy examinations and having to wait a lot more pleasant, it has kept them nicely occupied and distracted from any worries they have regarding their x-rays/ultrasounds. The area is a bright waiting area and we have had several comments from both patients and parents alike about how amazing the area is now.
"The toys and books have been used to distract the patients during their examinations and it is so nice to have areas and toys we can all be proud of. We would like to say a big thank you to all involved with the fundraising and that without such amazing support from the Jane's Appeal we would not have been able to achieve the waiting areas that we have."
This year's Asda Foundation Jane Tomlinson Run For All Leeds 10K, which once again includes the Clarion Corporate Challenge, takes place on July 20th. For more information and to enter visit www.runforall.com.
