Charity boost as City of York Triathlon returns for second year

Children's and cancer charities will be handed a funding boost next year when the City of York Triathlon returns to York Sport Village following this year's highly successful launch event.

Announcing details of the 2015 event which takes place on Sunday April 26, organisers UK Triathlon confirmed that the Jane Tomlinson Appeal will again be the official partner charity.

Following the success of the inaugural event, the number of places available for the 2015 triathlon has been increased to 600.

Competitors can choose from two distances - a 200m swim, 9K cycle ride and 2.5km run or 400m swim, 18K bike ride and 5K run. People can enter individually or as part of a relay team with each member doing one leg.

York Sport, on the edge of York University's Heslington East campus, boasts superb facilities and a spectator-friendly venue. The swims are held in the village's heated indoor pool followed by cycling and running legs on a multi-lap, traffic-free route.

Andrew Johnston of York Sport, said: "It is great to welcome UK Triathlon back for this challenging yet fun event. The triathlon earlier in the year was embraced by the people of York and showed off the fantastic range of facilities on offer at York Sport Village."

Keith Hancock, Race Director of UK Triathlon, said: "We were delighted the first City of York Triathlon was so well received and we are really looking forward to returning to York Sport Village for an even bigger event in 2015.

"It is also excellent the Jane Tomlinson Appeal, which supports the work of so many worthy causes, is the event's official partner charity."

Siobhan Curtis, the appeal's legacy manager, said: "An event like the City of York Triathlon provides a great opportunity for people to test themselves in a well organised challenge and raise money for charity into the bargain. We were really pleased to be involved with this year's first triathlon, which was a huge success, and next year's event promises to be even bigger and better."
