On Saturday 27th July as 17 teams lined up to take part in the annual Dragon Boat Race at Leeds Docks. The 2015 event was in aid of the Jane Tomlinson Appeal and was held alongside the 2-day Leeds Waterfront Festival. With an array of food and drink stalls along with plenty of sunshine, the Waterfront Festival provided a brilliant backdrop for the Dragon Boat event.
With a fancy dress prize up for grabs, the teams pulled out all the stops on their costumes for the event. Among the colourful outfits were pirates, mimes, minions and much more.
The teams included groups from Leeds Beckett University, NHS, Girl Guiding, Armley Junk'Tion, Leeds Council, Tesco, Yorkshire Water, Motiv8 Leeds, Ward Hadaway, Ahead Partnership, Capital Properties, Hzolo Residents Group and White Rose Rotary Club.
As the races got underway the teams got competitive, with all teams aiming to get the fastest overall time and be crowned winners of the Dragon Boat Race. All team's took part in 3 races throughout the heats and put on some fantastic performances getting into the spirit of the event.
Following the heats a neck and neck final took place, with the White Rose Rotary's clubs team pipping their rivals to the post to be crowned fastest team of the 2015 Dragon Boat Race. The Rotary team stepped on stage to accept their prize of £400 to spend at Fazenda (Granary Wharf).
With a fantastic fancy dress effort the 'Off With Their Heads' team from Leeds Beckett University won the best-dressed prize for their Alice in Wonderland themed costumes. The team were presented with a cocktail making class at The Alchemist (Greek Street) which opens in August.
Kim Seddon from the Jane Tomlinson Appeal said "The Dragon Boat Race was a brilliant event which all the teams enjoyed, and everyone got into the spirit of both the fancy dress and the competition to be the fastest team. We'd like to thank everyone who took part for supporting the Jane Tomlinson Appeal, and say a big thank you to Leeds Docks."
