The weekend of 9th October 2016 proved to be a busy and successful one for the Appeal Team. Not only did it mark the fourth Plusnet Yorkshire Marathon and the second Yorkshire 10 Mile, it was also the Appeal's first time as partner charity for the Perkins Great Eastern Run, a fast-growing half marathon in Peterborough. Once again, the Appeal Team did not disappoint and both regular and new fundraisers donned their team colours to run in support of children's and cancer charities in their region.
The thousands of participants in the marathon and 10 mile included around 270 runners raising money for the Jane Tomlinson Appeal. Before each race, the Appeal Team enjoyed exclusive hospitality at York University's Central Hall and joined their fellow runners to get into the marathon spirit.
Following the customary team photo it was off to the start lie to embark on the challenges ahead. Jane Tomlinson Appeal patron and Olympic gold medallist Hannah Cockcroft was also there to start the 10 Mile participants off on their journey around the sights of York.
While out on the course our runners were greeted by a roaring cheer station, led by the fantastic cheerleading squad from Leeds West Academy. The support gave them the boost to reach the finish line and join the team and their supporters once again in Central Hall for a celebratory pint and a well-deserved massage, courtesy of the Good Health Centre Leeds and Leeds Beckett University. With everyone in high spirits, it was the perfect opportunity to get a finishing time photo! The photos of our fantastic fundraisers can be found on Facebook, so take a look and see if you're there.
Meanwhile, in Peterborough, new members of the Appeal Team were gearing up to take on 13.1 miles. There were a record number of entries for the event this year, with over 170 entrants choosing to support the Jane Tomlinson Appeal. We were truly overwhelmed by the number of people out on course, especially considering this was our first time being a part of an event in Peterborough.
Joining the Appeal Team for the half marathon in her hometown was Rebecca Tomlinson. The race held a particular significance for the Tomlinson family, who lived in Peterborough previously. As Rebecca and the Appeal runners crossed the finish line, they were greeted by more than 10,000 people cheering them on. Overall, a fantastic day - we were made to feel very welcome by the people of Peterborough, especially our fantastic runners.
October 9th was a fantastic day for the Appeal Team and we are so grateful for the support of over 400 peoplein York and Peterborough. We also want to say a big thank you to the fantastic volunteers who helped out at both events - we could not have done this without you.
