The Jane Tomlinson Appeal was established by the late Jane Tomlinson CBE to raise funds for children's and cancer charities.

Help us reach our £5 million target

The Jane Tomlinson Appeal was set up by a very determined Yorkshirewoman to help children's and cancer charities across Yorkshire, the UK and the globe.

Before her death in 2007 Jane Tomlinson CBE raised £1.85m through a series of incredible physical challenges.

Mike Tomlinson and his three children, Suzanne, Rebecca and Steven, now have set their sights on a £5 million target. With the generous help of Jane Tomlinson Appeal supporters, the £3 million raised to date is already being put to good use by those in need.

Please help the Jane Tomlinson Appeal to keep helping families in need.

A big thank you to challenge sponsors Lucozade - whose support means the Jane Tomlinson Appeal Challenge team will have the energy to complete this incredible fundraising journey.

Taking on such a huge challenge involves a dietary challenge as well as an incredible physical and mental one.

Lucozade Sport Scientist, Jane Griffin ( BSc RD SENr) said: “Over the eight days from Paris to Yorkshire and finally London, it is vital the challenge team take on a high amount of carbohydrates, fluid and protein to make sure they can wake up each morning and keep going.

“Taking Mike Tomlinson as a model for the challenge, Mike will need to take on an average 4535kcals a day including on average 112.5g of protein and on average 750g of carbohydrate a day.

“The amount of fluid Mike will require will depend on his rate of sweat loss which depends on a lot of factors throughout his challenge such as weather, intensity and clothing. Mike will need to monitor his hydration throughout the challenge.”

And now for the science…..an easy way to keep a check on hydration is to keep an eye on the colour of your pee - so challenge members will be aiming to keep their pee to a pale straw colour!

Lucozade is supplying the Jane Tomlinson Appeal Challenge team with a full range of products to fuel and hydrate them through the challenge including Lucozade Sport Body Fuel, Carbo Gels, Jelly Beans, Protein Recovery Powder, Energy Bars and Recovery Bars.

And they're off….Paris to Yorkshire to London!

First stop the Paris Marathon! This Sunday Mike, Rebecca and the team will set off on their 8 day challenge to mark the 10th Anniversary of the Jane Tomlinson Appeal Anniversary.

Following in the footsteps of Jane, who set the endurance bar high completing challenges such as the Florida Ironman in 2004 and a 2500mile bike ride across America in 2006, an endurance challenge was the only fitting way to mark the anniversary.

Sunday will mark the start of the challenge with the Paris Marathon before the team then set off on a 6 day cycle ride on route to London via France, Belgium and the Appeal’s home turf of Yorkshire.

Joining the family for the challenge will be a team of friends including Appeal patrons Chrissie Wellington, Tracey Morris and supporter of the Appeal MP Greg Mulholland.

Mike Tomlinson said: “Jane’s feats have been un-paralleled and looking back several years on, seem all the more extraordinary. As a family we wanted to both mark the 10th Anniversary and celebrate it. We can’t begin to replicate what she achieved but in our own small way wanted to bow our heads to an extraordinary wife, mother and woman.

A challenge of this intensity will not only be mental challenge but without doubt a physical one to and to help keep the team hydrated along the way Lucozade will be supporting the challenge with product along the journey. ~

Chrissie Wellington is back!

Chrissie Wellington

It will come as no surprise to hear that Four time World Ironman champion Chrissie Wellington has taken on a new type of challenge for 2012. Having decided to take a rest from competing in Ironman this year Chrissie will be putting her power behind the Jane Tomlinson Appeal as part of their 10th Anniversary.

Setting off on April 15th Chrissie will join Mike & Rebecca Tomlinson as they set off on an 8 day challenge that will eclipse any challenge the Appeal has set since Jane’s death in 2007.

Not satisfied with one marathon the team will take part in both the Paris and London marathons with 6 days of cycling thrown in between for good measure.

With the 2012 London Marathon marking the 10th Anniversary of Jane Tomlinson running the marathon for the first time the Tomlinson family have chosen to follow in Jane’s endurance challenge footsteps this year. Jane defied the odds and public perception of cancer taking on an array of serious endurance events in order to raise over £1.85million for charity. As the first terminally ill breast cancer patient to take complete the London Marathon, Jane confronted what to many seemed impossible.

Having completed the Paris Marathon, Chrissie will join Mike, Rebecca and team as they cycle back to the charities home turf of Yorkshire as they cross the channel from Zeebrugge to Hull before setting off on a 2 day tour of Yorkshire on route to the capital.

Mike Tomlinson said:” It’s an enormous pleasure for us as a family to welcome Chrissie to the 10th anniversary challenge. The enthusiasm and attitude Chrissie shows not only in competing but in other aspects of her life strongly resembles Jane philosophies. It says much about her that despite an enormously busy schedule she’s happy to take on 2 marathons and 6 days of cycling, I just hope she’s not expecting me to keep up!”

Having been a patron of the Jane Tomlinson Appeal since 2010 Chrissie has helped raised significant sums of money for the Appeal and has recently hosted Run with Chrissie events in both Leeds and London in aid of the Appeal.

Chrissie said: “I am so incredibly honoured to be a Patron of Jane’s Appeal and this amazing challenge is a once in a lifetime opportunity to combine my masochistic love for endurance challenges with the ability to raise awareness and funds for an amazing and incredibly worthwhile cause. I can’t think of anything better! And the other Challenge team members can rest assured, I won’t be trying to set new personal best times. I want to complete and not compete!”

With charity at the focus, Chrissie will be taking part in the endurance challenge to highlight the Appeal’s anniversary milestone and members of the public can bid to join her too! Chrissie and the Appeal will be opening the doors to a member of the public to bid to join them each day of the cycle ride and have their chance to ride with a World Champion. All monies bid will be donated to the Appeal in a silent auction that will open Friday 9th March. For more information please visit www.janetomlinsonappeal.com

Jane Tomlinson Appeal celebrates 10th Anniversary

This April will mark 10 years since Jane Tomlinson, CBE, ran the London marathon for the first time and so a big challenge is planned. Jane defied the odds and public perception of cancer taking on an array of serious endurance events in order to raise over £1.85million for charity. As the first terminally ill breast cancer patient to take complete the London Marathon, Jane confronted what to many seemed impossible.

With this year's London Marathon marking the 10th anniversary of Jane’s first marathon & the beginning of her endurance challenge milestones in aid of the Jane Tomlinson Appeal the Tomlinson family have set themselves a 'marathon' challenge. But why stop at just one marathon! Mike & Rebecca Tomlinson will take on an 8 day challenge completing Paris Marathon ahead of a 6 day cycle route to London ahead of the London Marathon via Hull and the Appeal’s home turf of Yorkshire. Taking in the region’s key landmarks Mike & Rebecca will be joined by a team of cyclists as they take on the 100mile a day cycle route to the capital.

Following in the footsteps of Jane, who set the endurance bar high completing challenges such as the Florida Ironman in 2004 and a 2500mile bike ride across America in 2006, an endurance challenge was the only fitting way to mark the anniversary. Prior to Jane’s death in 2007 she’d not only completed a number of endurance events but had raised an incredible £1.85million in the process. With £4million having now been raised to date its hoped that the team will not only take on the challenge to complete the mileage but to get a step closer to the charities next fundraising target of £5million.

Mike said: “I still struggle to comprehend the endurance feats Jane completed and the starting point was the 2002 London Marathon. The aim was to raise £5,000 and here we are 10 years and £4 million. More than the money Jane helped people change lives and to celebrate this we wanted to celebrate the anniversary in appropriate fashion. So it’s not a black knees up but a strength sapping endurance challenge so with a new tub of Chamois cream and the bike out of mothballs we’ll be testing body and spirit let’s hope Jane’s spirit see’s me through.”

With the Paris Marathon taking place on Sunday 15th April there’s only 6 weeks to go till the challenge begins. Along the way the team will also be joined by a number of surprise guests taking part in the challenge. First of whom is to be announced later this week.

Having completed 50 races, a total of 266 days of running and shown a huge amount of grit and determination Karen completed her challenge on 30th December 2010.

Through this tough, personal challenge Karen chose to support Jane Tomlinson Appeal and to date has raised over 1400.

Reflecting on what is an amazing achievement Karen said "There have been many days when I have felt like just giving up and not bothering to go out at all, bad days at work, my appendix operation, family problems, bad weather and just bad days but the thought that Jane would not have given up really has kept me going. I have my health and my life to be thankful for and long may that continue. I will always be inspired by Jane Tomlinson and indeed now by the rest of her family too and amazed by her courage and determination along with many others"

Many people have asked me of my 2010 challenge, "Why?" And as the lady herself would have said "Why NOT!!"

To a true Yorkshire Hero, Thank you Jane for my journey & how good was that?
