Cricket star bowls up to launch 2015 Yorkshire Marathon

The Plusnet Yorkshire Marathon got off to a champion start today when Yorkshire County Cricket star Ryan Sidebottom officially launched the 2015 event.

Bowler Ryan - a key member of the Yorkshire team that carried off the County Championship for the first time in 13 years - launched the event at the club's famous Headingley Stadium, as the scramble for places in the hugely popular marathon got under way today.

Boasting a largely flat and scenic course taking in country lanes, villages and many of York's historic landmarks, the race has quickly established itself as a highlight on the county's sporting calendar. It was a sell out in 2013 - the year the event was first held - and all 7,000 places for the 2014 were also quickly snapped up.

Ryan said: "I am delighted to be able to help launch such a fantastic event as The Plusnet Yorkshire Marathon, which in just two years has rightly earned a reputation as one of the country's top road races.

"It is inspiring that thousands of people want to take on the challenge of running 26.2 miles to raise money for so many good causes.

"I know the crowds will turn out in force to cheer all the runners on. I hope all those taking part achieve their personal goals and I wish them all the very best of luck."

The marathon - which this year takes place on Sunday 11th October - is staged by as part of the legacy of the Jane's legacy.

Siobhan Curtis, Jane Tomlinson Appeal legacy manager, said: "The Plusnet Yorkshire Marathon has quickly gained a reputation as an excellent event that benefits the vital work of so many worthy causes.

"We are extremely grateful to all those people who will take on this challenge in 2015 to raise money for the Jane Tomlinson Appeal."
