The Ultimate Cycling Challenge

In aid of the Jane Tomlinson Appeal, Gareth and Gemma Talbot are embarking on a trip of a lifetime to complete a gruelling, challenging, and exhilarating bike ride through the Indian Himalayas. Cycling for 11 consecutive days, the couple will cover an average of 60km a day and reach the dizzying height of 5,600 meters above sea level. The trip - which takes place in September 2015 - will travel through diverse and difficult terrains and cross 6 mountain road passes, including a day long push over the Khardung La (one of the world's highest road passes accessible by bikes and vehicles).

If the distance and duration of this journey isn't demanding enough, Gareth and Gemma will also have to contend with less-than-ideal road conditions and overcome the incredibly demanding Himalayan altitude. Due to accessibility and remoteness the surfaces of the roads are often non-existent, and the high road passes can be muddy and slippery. Gareth and Gemma will spend considerable periods at high altitude, including a night at the Tso Kar Lake which rests at an astonishing 4,530 meters above sea level. This will be a challenge in itself due to the possibility of Acute Mountain Sickness at high altitudes.

To ensure that they can rise to this incredible challenge Gareth and Gemma have undergone months of tough training. In May alone, Gareth spent 51 hours on a bike, bringing the yearly total to an impressive 2,300 kilometers, with a climb of 47,840 metres, the equivalent of climbing Mount Everest 5 and a half times! Gareth and Gemma's progress in the lead up to the event can be followed on their blog

The pair will undertake their extraordinary challenge in September 2015, and Gareth has said 'both Gemma and I are really pleased to be raising funds for the Jane Tomlinson Appeal, from Gemma's fantastic fundraising last year while climbing mount Kilimanjaro it really did feel like the money raised was making a difference.  After deciding on the challenge for this year there really was no other charity we would like to raise money for. The whole appeal team has been brilliant in helping us prepare for the trip and all that remains is for us to get pedalling and try and raise as much as we can'.  To support Gareth and Gemma, visit
