Appeal Runners Celebrate Marathon and 10 Mile Success

Appeal Team runners are celebrating after completing yesterday's Plusnet Yorkshire Marathon and Plusnet Yorkshire 10 Mile.

Starting and finishing at the University of York's Heslington campus, the event was a great success with perfect weather providing ideal running conditions. With over 350 Appeal Team runners taking part in the Marathon, 2015 also saw the first ever Plusnet Yorkshire 10 Mile take place alongside the Marathon.

The Appeal Team were based at Central Hall, where both Marathon and 10 Mile runners were invited for pre and post-race hospitality. Appeal runners were welcomed with food and drink to fuel up pre-race and our Appeal Team volunteers were on hand to talk through those last minute nerves.

There was a craft station to keep kids busy, as well as a fun photo-booth for a before and after snap. Appeal runners thoroughly enjoyed Central Hall, saying "The hospitality was fantastic and the arts and crafts for the children was such a good idea!". Friends and family were invited into Central Hall to join their runners - one runner said "the hospitality was great and much appreciated by me and my family".

Appeal Team 2015

There was a mixture of nerves and excitement pre-race, with many participants taking on their first ever marathon. With marathon runners ready and raring to go The Appeal headed up to the start line to cheer on the marathon start as over 9,000 runners set off on their epic challenge. Following the marathon start, the first ever Plusnet Yorkshire 10 Mile set off with 2,000 participants hot on the heels of the marathon runners.

Following the first few miles of the Marathon route before joining up with the last leg of the course, the Appeal team 10 milers crossed the finish line and headed back to Central Hall where they were welcomed with plenty of goodies and congratulations.

Friends and family of Marathon runners were welcomed to the Jane Tomlinson Appeal cheer point at 17 miles to give runners some much needed encouragement as they embarked on the final stages of the marathon. Leeds West Academy's cheerleaders, who have supported The Appeal at events throughout 2015, were on hand to give an extra loud cheer for Appeal runners. Our volunteers were also there to support the runners, and received fantastic feedback with one runner saying "thank you for all your support - your staff and volunteers do you proud!".

As marathon runners joined the 10 Mile finishers in Central Hall, the Appeal Team runners celebrated their achievement together. All Appeal runners were given a free drinks token for a celebratory drink, with Leeds Brewery's 'Yorkshire Gold' on offer in Central Hall. There were cakes baked by Appeal volunteers to re-fuel the runners, as well as post-race massage from Coach House Physiotherapy and an Appeal Team goody bag for each runner kindly donated by LUSH York and Ultimate Fitness 4 U in Leeds.

The Marathon also saw Appeal fundraiser Nicky Busby complete her 1000km challenge. Nicky set herself the impressive goal of running 1000km in 2015, starting her journey on 1st January this year. Aiming to raise £1000 for The Appeal, Nicky celebrated her amazing achievement with a custom cake and champagne presented at the finish line.

The day saw many fundraisers complete a season of running, and is set to be a fantastic fundraiser for The Appeal. With the 2015 event a fantastic success, we're giving runners the opportunity to sign up for a guaranteed place in the 2016 Yorkshire Marathon. To join the Appeal team for next year's marathon email
