A group of Yorkshire based cycling enthusiasts returned from Paris in the summer of 2013 fresh from watching Chris Froome's impressive victory in the Tour De France, their minds already anticipating the 2014 Grand Depart from Leeds.
These cyclists all frequent Pin Bar Leeds, a Leeds Brewing Company pub that sits in the middle of the cobbled streets of Dock Street and, as the banter (and the ale) flew thick and fast, ideas were fermented and debated.
How could they make the Grand Depart an event to share and remember, celebrating Yorkshire's greatest moment in the cycling spotlight?
The inspiration for Pavé to Cobble was born. Six enthusiastic, dedicated cyclists (and would be cyclists!) would celebrate the Tour Depart by cycling 500+ miles from Paris to Leeds, arriving back just in time to watch Chris Froome start to defend his title.
But these cyclists wanted to achieve more than just a personal challenge. They wanted Pavé To Cobble to fund raise for a really meaningful Yorkshire based charity that they believed passionately in.
'The decision to fund raise for the Jane Tomlinson Appeal was an easy one' says Dave Walton, one of the cyclists 'She was a Yorkshire woman with grit, determination and fighting spirit and is a real inspiration to us'
So the team contacted the Appeal and have set an ambitious target of raising £10,000 between them. The team will pay all their own costs and are already planning their fundraising - personal and company sponsorship, quiz nights at Pin Bar and specially brewed beers from the Leeds Brewing company, culminating in a celebratory street party as the cyclists return to Dock Street on Wednesday 2nd July 2014
'Pavé to Cobble is about six cyclists cycling over six days from the cobbles of Paris to the cobbles of Leeds ' says Chris Terry, Manager of Pin Bar 'and we are hoping to get the whole community around Dock Street involved in the celebration. Everyone will be welcome to the street party as we showcase our renowned Yorkshire hospitality, bringing family, friends and strangers together'
